Metabolic & Rare Diseases Research Team

Harrison Muturi PhD.
I was born and raised in Thika, Kenya where I undertook my early schooling. My upbringing on a farm was not easy, with a lack of basic requirements of life like safe drinking water and electricity. These humble beginnings taught me hard work, persistence, and a zeal to aim higher. Following graduation from high school, I got an opportunity to go for my undergraduate and graduate degrees in Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University in India and then obtained a scholarship to University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany for PhD studies. It was during this time that I developed a passion for biomedical sciences. I became fascinated with gaining a better understanding of a range of diseases and how they develop.
Currently, I am working as a Method Development Lead Scientist in LabCorp drug development, Greenfield Indiana. My responsibilities include, development and validation of analytical methods, approving data and documentation related to studies. Also, liaison with sponsors and lead communication as subject matter experts.
Previously, I worked as Research Assistant Professor at the Department of Biomedical Sciences, Ohio University. My primary research work focused on investigating the genetic and environmental interactions underlying type 2 diabetes, NAFLD/NASH, and their cardiovascular complications. I also investigated to delineate the molecular mechanism linking between obesity and prostate/breast cancer.
I am also the Executive director and founder of HECI medicine incorporation (501c approved), a non-profit organization focusing on rare diseases in Africa. As founder of HECI Medicine Incorporation I learnt the art of developing strategic planning initiatives, identifying, and solving problems. I oversee preparation and submission of all necessary documents to appropriate regulatory agencies. HECI focuses on providing faster access to diagnosis and therapies to rare diseases patients in Africa. Provide research grants to researchers in universities and research institutions based in Africa who work on rare diseases with a goal of encouraging them to bolster research on rare diseases. Through my organization (HECI medicine) I have built network with physicians in Kenya, Zambia, and Uganda.
I have authored over 20 scientific articles and presented my research work in more than 30 national and international conferences.
