James Mutunga-Headshot (002).JPG

Dr. Mutunga is a biomedical scientist with expertise in application of cutting-edge molecular biology and biochemistry on understanding vector borne disease of human and animals in a one-health context. From a translational approach, James conducts a bench-to-field bio-efficacy evaluation using in vitro, in vivo, in silico, ex vivo pre-clinical studies and field studies in different epidemiological and ecological settings. Some of the product evaluation pipelines involve discovery and testing of new highly selective toxicants for mosquito control, evaluation of spatial and topical repellents, development of insecticide resistance breaking chemistries, discovery of novel drug targets and understanding disease vector bionomics. He is also undertaking research in evaluating how vector and pest biology is impacted by climate change at the molecular level and how such biological plasticity may define an evolving disease risk and transmission landscape at a local and global scale.

Dr. Mutunga is currently an Assistant Professor in the Biology program of the School of Science, Engineering and Technology at the Pennsylvania State University - Harrisburg. Previously, he worked as assistant research at the Penn State University Park in a program on climate change, health, and the built environment, with a focus on climate change effects on arthropod biology in a One Health context. He graduated with a BS Biology and MSc in Biochemistry from Jomo-Kenyatta University in Kenya. Dr Mutunga holds a PhD in Medical Entomology from Virginia Tech (2011) and a postdoctoral fellowship at the Emerging Pathogens Institute, University of Florida.
